✕After 50 years in the poultry business, the Chiasson family of New Brunswick, Canada turned their efforts towards aquaculture, and opened the doors to Acadian Fish Farm Ltd. (Pisciculture Acadienne Ltée), starting a new chapter for their family-owned business. Located in Saint Simon, New Brunswick, Acadian Fish Farm is a sustainable aquafarm specializing in Arctic char.
Utilizing an indoor recirculating aquaculture system, the Arctic char grown on site are raised without the use of added hormones or antibiotics. The Arctic char at Acadian Fish Farm are the same species currently being studied at the Coastal Zones Research Institute (CZRI) in Shippagan, New Brunswick. The institute, formed from a merger of three local research and development centers including the aquaculture research team of the New Brunswick Department of Agriculutre, Fisheries, and Aquaculture, work together towards a shared goal of making New Brunswick a hub for research, scientific dissemination, technology and knowledge transfers for industry members, professionals, and the general public. Acadian Fish Farms implements the findings from CZRI to improve their farming an aquacultural practices. Notable practices include raising their char in a natural water temperature of seven degrees celsius (45 degrees fahrenheit), which they are naturally adapted to. Operationally they save energy by using zero energy to heat or cool the tank water, and all fish waste produced is recycled into fertilizer to grow wheat for their laying hens.
