Vancouver-based company Raincoast Trading was founded in 1995 by a fishing family who wanted to see their high-quality, local canned products become accessible to more people. To this day, it strives to show consumers accustomed to low quality imported canned products that there is a different way - that pride in its process and a commitment to sustainability can produce high-quality canned products.

The company sources from fisheries with sustainable stocks and from fishers who adhere to responsible fishing methods. It also works to ensure that its fish can be tracked from boat to can and that this information can be made available to consumers. As part of its commitment to quality and sustainability, Raincoast Trading developed a system to track product information. Production codes found on the bottom of Raincoast products, including its canned albacore tuna and wild salmon, give not only an expiration date, but can also be used to trace the origin of the fish. The codes can identify vessel, captain name, vessel flag, harvest method, area of capture and even trip dates.

Raincoast Trading is dedicated to preserving the well-being of the world’s marine ecosystems. The company supports efforts to minimize overfishing, bycatch, habitat damage. Every fish that is hand packed into Raincoast cans comes from the healthier stocks in the Pacific Northwest using hook and line fishing methods. Raincoast Trading is proud to be the first Canadian packaged retail seafood company endorsed by Ocean Wise as an environmentally-friendly seafood choice for retail grocers and consumers around the world. The company’s canned tuna products are also one of only two brands to receive a passing grade on Greenpeace Canada’s sustainability ranking of 14 major canned tuna brands.
